As āsana prepares the body for meditation, so do the sacred sounds of Sanskrit. Sanskrit, refined and purified through the ages, naturally leads the mind deeply into meditation. Also, within the sounds of the language of Yoga are the “sonic enzymes” necessary to digest the understanding of yoga philosophy, whose body of knowledge is written in Sanskrit. In this workshop we will combine the roots of āsana and the roots of yoga’s sacred language to create an environment where a meditative experience can arise from the meeting of these oceans.  From the side of language, we will explore:

  • A yogic model of learning, designed to teach you how to establish one-pointed focus, eliminate limiting habituated patterns and awaken to a deeper sense of freedom and self-awareness.
  • Three essential elements of Sanskrit sound, allowing you to develop an intimacy with the language of yoga.
  • Beginning to read and accurately pronounce yoga-related words and sacred verses, savoring the beauty and power of the language and its resonance.
  • Chanting a selection of the most important of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the quintessential yogic text as well as supporting verses from various sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Hitopadesha, Mandukya Upanishad and Vairagya Shatakam.
  • The Yoga of Meditation: Exploring Patanjali’s meditation on Mastery of The Elements.
