SANSKRIT TRAINING: SAN FRANCISCO, APRIL 17th & 18th

“If one has knowledge of Sanskrit, then knowledge of yoga is possible as well.”Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois

Since ancient times the practice of yoga has included the study of Sanskrit and the chanting of Sanskrit mantras to induce calm and clarity in meditation. Sanskrit is integral to the practice of asana: an essential adjunct for harmonizing and balancing the mind. Knowledge of Sanskrit, even at the most beginning level, makes it possible to grasp the subtleties of yoga philosophy, whose body of teachings are written in it. Through experiencing the profundity of Sanskrit sounds, feeling their force and power, and the unique way they vibrate the palate, body and chakras, your yoga practice and understanding can move to new depths.

In this weekend course, we will explore the following:

* A yogic model of learning, designed to teach you how to establish one-pointed focus, eliminate    limiting habituated patterns, and awaken to a deeper sense of freedom and self-awareness.

* The essential elements of Sanskrit sound, allowing you to develop an intimacy with the language of yoga.

* Beginning to read and accurately pronounce the Sanskrit alphabet and a selection of yoga-related words and yoga sutras using the original Devanagari script, savoring the beauty and power of the language and its resonance.

* Basic Sanskrit grammar, experiencing how sounds combine with each other.

* Chanting a selection of the most important of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the quintessential yogic text and foundation of Ashtanga Yoga as well as supporting verses from various sacred texts.

This class will be fun and engaging and can lead you deeper into your experience of yoga both on and off of the mat. No previous experience with Sanskrit is necessary to attend.

I highly recommend this training to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of yoga by exploring its sacred language and philosophy! —Chuck Miller, Certified Senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher.
