Here is an article on me from the July 2010 issue of Yoga Journal Japan.
Previous Sanskrit & Iyengar Yoga Workshop in SF – June 26th and 27th! Next Sanskrit in New York City! New York Open Center, August 6th – 8th

I work with individuals and couples, utilizing a Yoga Psychology-based model of counseling geared towards helping clients to discover the freedom that comes from identifying and moving beyond limiting, habituated patterns and beliefs. It is a joy to witness clients transform anxiety, depression, low self-confidence, and constricting relationship patterns into self-awareness and powerful change.
My post-graduate training was at the Naropa Institute (1988-89) and John F. Kennedy University (1993-95). To my formal training, I add 29 years of meditation practice, 17 years of yoga, and 12 years as a teacher of yoga philosophy and Sanskrit.
I work for One Medical Group http://www.onemedical.com/sf/doctors in our Pacific Heights and SOMA offices and also work extensively with clients via phone and Skype.
I have found Skype to be a particularly effective medium for counseling, allowing me to work directly with clients around the world, beyond the constraints of location.

Sanskrit cannot be taught without great love, a deep understanding of the transformative beauty of sound, and the vulnerability to approach each moment as new. Joshua Michaell is a rare teacher who has these qualities in abundance.
—Vyaas Houston, Founder, American Sanskrit Institute
Joshua Michaell carries with him an enormous amount of the soothing presence of Sanskrit and Yoga. He has already earned a reputation as a well-respected teacher of both Sanskrit and Yoga Philosophy. I am very proud of my association with Joshua and I am excited to see how his teaching unfolds. I wish him, as well as his promising students, the best of the best of health, happiness and prosperity.
—Ram Karan Sharma, President, International Association of Sanskrit Studies
A workshop with Joshua is like a cheap ticket to the heart of the Himalayas!
—Jonathan Bricklin, Program Director, New York Open Center
Using yoga itself at the heart of the method, in every aspect, from the simple act of listening, to how to articulate the sounds of this profoundly spiritual language, studying with Joshua make learning fun and effective. I recommend courses with Joshua to anyone interested in a deeper perspective of yoga, its philosophy, and its language.
—Chuck Miller, Certified Ashtanga Yoga teacher
Having worked with many of today’s spiritual luminaries – from Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson to Jean Houston and Ram Dass – it’s clear to me that Joshua Michaell is a very bright light amongst the next generation of transformational teachers. His skillfulness as a presenter of profound spiritual teachings is beautifully augmented by his ability to create a workshop environment of exceptional safety, openness, and fun. Joshua provide a quality of content and experience that I wholeheartedly recommend.
—Debra Evans, former Director of Conference Programming for WholeLife, Inc.
Joshua Michaell is a deeply committed and passionate teacher of Sanskrit and Yoga Philosophy. He has worked closely for a number of years with Vyaas Houston and the American Sanskrit Institute, which is considered one of the foremost institutions for learning Sanskrit in the West. For anyone who wants an intimate and in-depth introduction to Sanskrit, the language of Yoga, and to the philosophy contained within this sacred language, I highly recommend that you enroll in one of Joshua's courses.
—Govinda Kai Yamaguchi, Certified Ashtanga Yoga teacher.
The superb and polished energy of the Sanskrit Language was taught with grace and clarity by Joshua Michaell. After just one weekend course at the Open Center in NYC, we became deeply familiar with pronunciation techniques, knew the entire Sanskrit alphabet, and all loved the fact that we had great fun along the way. I was astonished at the ease of learning this profound language with Joshua at the helm. I look forward to his next course.
—Jill Camera, NYC yoga instructor and co-author of The Yoga Fan
Not only is Joshua Michaell supremely passionate and knowledgeable about the Sanskrit language, his spontaneous and unsparing wit makes learning it a joyous, laughter-filled experience.
